Sad news for us enthusiasts of the joy of running along the waterfront. The pier at Aquatic Park, which is iconic in its shape, responsible for protecting the cove at the Park for all the swimmers, and is a crucial wave break for all the historic ships is crumbling and will close indefinitely. Half of it was already closed, now a recent earthquake has rendered the structure untenable.
I have taken hundreds of pictures from the end of the pier, with HFRC club members, fellow racers after DSE races in the 80s and 90s and early 2000s, family members and visitors. It feels like a loss of a key feature to our city’s waterfront.
There was a campaign to raise funds for the pier underway, but with $100 million price tag, private fundraising will be a challenge. It’s a Federal Government facility, so the city has little say in the funding or execution of a rebuild. Do I suspect the pier may become an eyesore for an extended period of time.
Francisco’s Municipal Pier near Aquatic Park closed indefinitely
The pier has been in dire need of repair for some time.
